Our Recommendations
Here are our personal picks - favorite tools, materials, as well as things we use week in and week out, and have blogged and like to talk about. We would never recommend anything that we don’t whole-heartedly endorse and use ourselves. If anything is interesting to you, by clicking on the image or on the red links it will take you directly to Amazon and a very small portion of the cost will come to us as affiliates. Let us know how you like them and please feel free to reach out if you have questions about any companies or products that you are thinking about going with and we will post our suggestions here.
Soil-Block Makers
Here are the soil-block makers we talk about on the blog. On the right is the 4 inch square, single, large block maker - you can click here or on the image to read more about it. We like to use this for tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers - basically any variety that will live in the greenhouse for 2-3 months before being transplanted outside.
We especially love the soil block maker that creates four medium sized blocks at once (about 2”x2” each, click here) that’s our go-to for most other seeds (on the right) , and lastly the one that makes 20 tiny soil blocks, which is great for starting lots of seeds at the same time if you’re planning on transplanting them soon (click here)!
Soil Mix
The recipe we use is on the Gardening Tips blog and comes from one of our favorite books The New Organic Grower by Eliot Coleman - here are links to the ingredients we use.
Our Favorite Seeding Tools
If you read about this in our blog, check it out here (or click on the image). This little kit is fantastic.
The Famous Hori Hori Garden Knife
There are a lot of other versions of this Hori Hori garden knife out there, but this is the best one we could find online, in no small part because it has that important steel cap on the handle that you don’t want to do without. Trust me on that!
The Dibber
What’s a dibber? Well, aside from having an awesome name a dibber is awesome for planting… (and for self-defense, but that’s a different post).
Seedling Heat Mats
Seedling heat mats come in different sizes. The one linked here is large - 48” x 20” because we can set several seedling trays on it at the same time.
Mister Spray Bottle
We love this spray bottle to keep our seedlings moist. Coincidentally it’s made by Haws, the 150 year old British company famous for making the classic watering can featured in the Peter Rabbit stories by Beatrix Potter.
